Sharks Split Games at the Navy Open

LIU picks up fourth win of the season with win over Chapman

ANNAPOLIS, MD. — The Long Island University men's water polo team (4-2, 0-0 Northeast Water Polo Conference) split its pair of contests at the Navy Open on Saturday, rebounding from falling to The George Washington University with a 19-12 win over Chapman University. 

Against Chapman on Saturday evening, the Sharks held a 9-5 lead through the first 16 minutes of action, surged by a first-half hat trick by junior Thomaz Figueiredo. LIU kept its foot on the gas in the second half, going on to defeat Chapman 19-12. 

Figueiredo, sophomore Lucas Ramirez, junior Jack French, and sophomore Dylan Rothenberg tied for a team-high three goals in the win, while freshman Sebastiano Figari and sophomore Francisco de Zengotita Rodriguez each scored a pair of goals. Additionally, sophomore Mark Malamud added a goal in the win. 

In its game against George Washington, LIU found itself in a 6-6 draw with the Revolutionaries at halftime, aided by a pair of goals from de Zengotita Rodriguez. While the two squads traded goals throughout the second half, LIU was unable to recapture the lead, falling 14-13. 

Sophomore Dylan Rothenberg led LIU with a hat trick, while de Zengotita Rodriguez, junior Csanad Varga, French, and Figari each scored twice. Ramirez and Malamud each scored one goal against George Washington. 

LIU returns to action on Friday, Sept. 11, when it travels to the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, New Jersey. The Sharks face off against Mount St. Mary's University (Md.) in their first game of the tournament at 2 p.m.
