EDISON, N.J. - Three members of the Long Island University women's water polo team received all-conference awards from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Wednesday, as senior Sydney deVroedt, graduate student Elena Camarena and graduate student Martina Giannoni were all the recipients of several MAAC awards.

deVroedt was named co-Offensive Player of the Year on top of being a unanimous first-team All-MAAC selection this season. Over the course of the season, deVroedt scored 132 goals, had 24 assists, had 57 steals, 55 ejections drawn and 34 blocks. The Hollywood, Florida native was a second-team All-MAAC selection in the 2024 season and a 2023 first-team All-MAAC selection as a member of St. Francis Brooklyn.

"Huge congratulations to Sydney for being named the MAAC women's water polo co-Offensive Player of the Year!" LIU women's water polo Head Coach Morgan Allison said. "Her dedication and relentless work over the past four years have truly paid off. Scoring 100 goals and counting this season, this award is well deserved. I couldn't be prouder of her for receiving this!

Camarena joined deVroedt as a unanimous first-team All-MAAC selection, racking up 91 goals and leading the team in assists (62), steals (61) and ejections drawn (77). Over her LIU career, the Madrid, Spain native has earned four first-team All-MAAC honors (2022-25 seasons) and was the 2022 co-Defensive Player of the Year.

"Sydney and Elena being unanimously selected to the All-MAAC First Team says it all, they've absolutely earned it!" Allison said. "I'm so proud of both of them for leading both in and out of the pool and always putting in the extra effort."

Giannoni was a second-team All-MAAC goalkeeper this spring, posting 205 saves, 10 assists and 24 steals with the Sharks this spring. The Milan, Italy native has received second-team All-MAAC goalkeeper honors in each of her two seasons with LIU.

"Congratulations to Martina on being named second-team goalie for MAAC women's water polo!" Allison said. "She's so deserving of this recognition – her dedication and hard work over the past two seasons at LIU have truly paid off. She leads the team's defense, and we are lucky to have her in the cage! I'm incredibly proud of her!"

While the Sharks received numerous awards for their accomplishments in the pool, the honors didn't stop there; graduate student Kate Hinrichs, senior Emma Sardo, deVroedt, Camarena and Giannoni were all members of the MAAC Water Polo All-Academic Team. To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must complete two semesters and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
