LEXINGTON, Va – The Long Island University women's water polo team traveled to Lexington, Virginia to begin its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference slate this weekend, going 2-1 to open conference play.
"It was a great first weekend kicking off conference play," LIU women's water polo Head Coach Morgan Allison-Prokhin said. "I am proud of the team and the work they have put in leading up to the start of the MAAC games. We look forward to taking what we learned during the weekend into the rest of the season."
The Sharks opened the weekend with a 15-8 win over Iona University on Saturday afternoon, led by senior Sydney DeVroedt and freshman Greta Tadday both scoring five goals in the win. Graduate student Elena Camarena was close behind with four goals in the win over Iona, while freshman Olivia Booth and graduate student Kate Hinrichs both scored a goal each. Camarena led LIU with three assists, while DeVroedt posted a team-high five steals. In the goal, Martina Giannoni had 11 saves and three steals.
In a 22-12 win over Siena College, LIU was led Tadday's seven goals, with DeVroedt scoring six and Camarena finishing with five goals. Booth led LIU with three assists, while DeVroedt had two blocks in the win.
The Sharks scored at least five goals in each quarter of the game against Saints.
LIU fell to Marist College 13-12 on Sunday morning, in a game where DeVroedt once again led LIU with five goals. Camarena posted six steals in the loss to the Red Foxes.
Up next on the schedule is another three-game MAAC set in Philadelphia, where the Sharks will take on Villanova University at noon on Saturday, March 22, and Virginia Military Institute at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 22, followed by a matchup against La Salle University at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 23.
