Women's Water Polo Celebrates Four Seniors, Splits Pair of Conference Games

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — On Sunday afternoon the LIU women's water polo team honored its four seniors Elena Camarena, Paola Dominguez-Castro, Rachel Loomis and Dib Peraivani before its match against Villanova.

After the festivities ended the Sharks got straight to work, grabbing an early 6-1 lead after goals from Dominguez-Castro, Camarena and Samantha Boothe. Villanova would get two goals back but it would be too little too late as every time the Wildcats tried to mount a comeback, LIU would score two goals in response as it took home the victory 14-6.

The second match of the day was between two nationally ranked MAAC favorites as LIU took on Wagner in a heated showdown. Wagner struck early, taking a 4-1 lead but goals form Kate Hinrichs, Emma Sardo and Diba Peiravani would tie it up. The Seahawks would score late to take a 5-4 lead at the half and momentum begun to shift their way. They scored to gain a two goal lead in the third and for the rest of the match LIU would have to chase its rival. The Sharks would get within striking distance but could not complete the comeback as they fell 13-10.

Dominguez-Castro scored the most goals for LIU with seven, six of which came against Villanova.

Camarena was second on the team with six goals.

Sydney deVroedt had a team-high six assists.

Martina Gianonni made 29 saves across both matches.

The Sharks return to the pool on Saturday April 6 when they continue conference play against Marist.
