CLAREMONT, Calif. — The LIU women's water polo team kicked off the Convergence Tournament on Friday and earned two huge victories.
In the first match of the day No. 22 LIU took on No. 17 Pacific in what could be the match of the year.
The Sharks jumped out to an early 5-2 lead but the Tigers kept battling back. At halftime it was 8-5 LIU and while it tried to gain control of the match, Pacific rattled off five goals to take the lead. The Sharks responded with three in a row to tie it, followed by a Tigers goal with a minute left.
LIU looked like it was in trouble until
Paola Dominguez-Castro buried a penalty to shot to take the match to overtime, tied at 13.
Overtime was all Sharks as they scored the only three goals, winning 16-13.
The second match of the day was all LIU as they dominated Redlands in a 16-0 win.
Paola Dominguez-Castro scored a team-high eight goals on the day followed by
Sydney deVroedt with six and
Elena Camarena with five.
Kate Hinrichs scored four and
Ale Aranguren had three.
The Sharks return to the pool Saturday when they play Cal Baptist and No. 9 Long Beach State.
