BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Virginia is for postseason tennis!
For the second time in three years, the LIU women's tennis team will face Virginia in the opening round of the Women's Tennis Championship.
The NEC champion Sharks drew the 12th-seeded Cavaliers in Friday's opening round.
Princeton and Fordham will compete in the other opening round match in Charlottesville.
LIU fell to Virginia, 4-0, in the opening round in 2021.
Four current LIU student-athletes also competed in singles in that NCAA match —
Victoria Erechtchenko,
Elinor Storkaas,
Bianca Compuesto and
Kate Jorjoliani.
"We had a very good match with them," coach
Jan Griga recalled. "We're excited to go back and hopefully do better. It's the Big Dance. We've earned it. These girls have earned their spot there. Today we're going to enjoy the moment. And we'll go out there and give it our best."
Said Storkaas: "Last time was a tough match, so I'm expecting it to be a tough match again. But I think we're ready. We've been practicing hard the whole season. And we're still practicing really hard. So I think it's going to be a good match for us."
