POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The LIU women's water polo team is headed to a MAAC Championship rematch with Wagner on Sunday.
The third-seeded Sharks defeated second-seeded and host Marist, 13-10, on Saturday to advance to the championship game.
LIU took a four-goal lead when
Kate Hinrichs scored in the final minute of the third quarter.
And after the Red Foxes scored the opening two goals of the fourth quarter to pull within 11-9,
Elena Camarena answered with her third goal of the game to blunt the momentum and restore a three-goal cushion.
LIU led wire-to-wire.
Afterward, coach
Gabby Juarez particularly complimented goalie
Julia Zebak, who had a critical save to maintain a three-goal lead with five minutes remaining. Zebak has perservered through a shoulder injury all season.
"That fourth quarter was huge," Juarez said. "If Julia doesn't make that save, we're only up by two."
The Sharks will face Wagner for the championship on Sunday at 1 p.m.
LIU will have retribution on its mind after falling 18-7 in last year's championship game.
Juarez noted the team will be extra motivated since this is the first graduating class of the Sharks' program.
"I can't think of a hungrier team than our team," Juarez said. "It's really wonderful to get to the finals."
