Inaugural Sharks Reach Women's Hockey Milestone With 100 Games Played

1/23/2023 4:04:00 PM

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Four years after the birth of the LIU women's hockey program, the original class of recruits are hitting a big milestone.

Megan Bouveur and Alva Johnsson earlier this month became the first student-athletes in program history to reach the 100-games-played plateau with the Sharks.

Teammate Abby Latorella then joined the club the following weekend against Post.

Next up: Carrigan Umpherville, who sits at 98 career games heading into this weekend's two-game series against Saint Michael's at Northwell Health Ice Center, with Stella Scott (92 games) also within striking distance.

"It is very special for me to have played more than 100 games in my university career at LIU," said Bouver, a team captain. "Alva and I have been here together since the beginning. It is definitely something I will remember."

Bouveur has played 103 games at LIU. The senior from Victoria, B.C., has tallied 75 points (37 goals, 38 assists) during her four-year collegiate career.

Johnsson, who shares captain duties with Bouveur, has played in 102 games for LIU. The senior from Stockholm, Sweden, has racked up 48 points (22 goals, 26 assists) during her time as a Shark.

"To be one of the first Sharks in history to play more than 100 games at LIU is an honor to me," said Johnsson, a powerful two-way defenseman. "Being part of the inaugural season team and building this program has been a journey I am very proud of."

The continued contribution from that inaugural group is a big reason why the Sharks are atop the NEWHA standings (13-1-2).

Bouveur ranks third on the team with 18 points (10 goals, 8 assists). Johnsson's strong defensive play on the blue line has helped lead the Sharks to a 14-10-2 record.

LIU host Saints Michael's on Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m..
