BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – LIU gymnastics sophomore
Mara Titarsolej and fencing sophomore
Laura Fekete were named Co-Female Athletes of the Year while men's basketball graduate student
Ty Flowers was named the Male Athlete of the Year at Long Island University's 2022 Athletic Awards banquet, dubbed 'One LIU', on Tuesday evening.
The event, held in person for the first time in two years, also saw
Demetri Skoumbakis of men's soccer and
Kelly Iocca from women's cross country earn LIU's Scholar Athlete of the Year honors.
It was a record-breaking sophomore campaign for
Mara Titarsolej. During the last Sharks home meet of 2022 against North Carolina, Titarsolej scored the programs first perfect 10.000 on uneven bars. Her NQS of 9.940 finished in a three-way tie for eighth among all gymnasts in the country. She finished tied for fifth with a mark of 9.925 on uneven bars in the NCAA Regionals hosted by Auburn University. She was named by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association to the uneven bars first-team with a national qualifying score of 9.940. Her All-American honors mark the first time in program history that an LIU gymnast has earned this prestigious distinction.
Additionaly, Titarsolej won the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Specialist of the Week four times during the regular season and at the EAGL Championships in Washington, D.C., she also took home the honors of EAGL Specialist of the Year with the highest NQS among all gymnasts in the league.
Sophomore
Laura Fekete had a season that rivaled her record-breaking freshman campaign when she earned first team All-American honors for the second consecutive season when in the women's épée event at the NCAA Fencing Championships she earned a bronze medal, finishing tied for third overall in the country.
Fekete also earned USFCA Second Team honors in women's épée after a season that saw her winning the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association championship in épeé, securing the Salle Santelli Women's Épée Trophy.
Graduate Student
Ty Flowers was honored by the MET Basketball Writers association when he was named to the All-Met Second team. Flowers was also tabbed by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) to the First Team All-District for District 15. 2021-22 NABC Division I All-District teams and coaches.
He earned first team All-NEC honors, ranks among leaders in virtually every conceivable category, including scoring (19.0, second), made three-pointers (3.0, second), blocks (1.6, fourth), rebounding (7.7, fifth), three-point percentage (.393, sixth), steals (1.4, tenth), free throw percentage (.747, tenth) and assists (3.2, 11th).
