SHARKS WIN! Men's Lacrosse Completes Comeback Against Hofstra, 14-11

Box Score HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Thanks to a seven goal fourth quarter, the LIU men's lacrosse team came back to defeat Hofstra, 14-11, in the first round of the inaugural edition of the Long Island Cup. The Sharks improved to 3-1 on the season with the victory.
 
SHARK BITES:
  • After a scoreless first ten minutes, the Sharks nabbed two goals in the final five minutes of the first quarter, courtesy of Marcin Maleski and Jake Gillis to end the quarter ahead 2-0.
  • Hofstra scored the first three goals of the second quarter but Will Snelders snapped the Pride streak to tie the game 3-3 just under halfway through the second frame.
  • Hofstra scored the final three goals of the half to enter the third quarter ahead, 6-3.
  • Just as the first half started, the second started the same way with Maleski finding the back of the net for LIU to cut the Shark deficit to 6-4.
  • Down 9-6 with the clock winding down, James Butler funneled a shot past Hofstra goalie Mac Gates with less than 25 seconds left to chip away the Hofstra lead and make it 9-7 entering the final quarter.
  • After giving up the first goal of the fourth, the Sharks erupted for four straight goals starting with a Richie LaCalandra shot into the back of the net and ending with a pair of goals from Maleski and Gillis to give the Sharks the 11-10 lead with under seven minutes to go.
  • A fourth goal from Maleski, coupled with goals from Blake Behlen, along with an empty net goal, courtesy of LaCalandra, sealed the Sharks 14-11 comeback victory on the road.
  • Up next, the Sharks will play on Sunday, February 27 at 12 p.m., when they face Stony Brook in the inaugural championship game of the Long Island Cup.
