DEPTFORD, N.J. – The LIU bowling team is competing with some of the top teams in the nation at the Northeast Classic this weekend. The Sharks went 2-3 on the first day of action Friday, and 3-2 in Saturday's action. LIU is at 5-5 overall after two days, and in 15th place heading into Sunday's bracket play.
SHARK BITES
- Friday, LIU opened the day with a 948-943 loss to Wilmington (214-169, 155-153, 143-187, 207-212, 224-227) followed by a 1075-926 loss t Youngstown State (214-205, 197-170, 168-217, 167-237, 180-246).
- The day was highlighted with two wins over top-25 ranked teams. First, a 1078-976 win over #22 Lincoln Memorial (204-226, 250-202, 223-162, 202-184, 199-202). And then the Sharks had a huge win, beating the top team in the nation, #1 Sam Houston State, 1054-1020 (210-162, 180-199, 264-226, 178-215, 222-218).
- LIU capped day one with a loss to #2 McKendree, 1079-908 (195-180, 192-220, 182-243, 181-198, 158-238).
- Saturday, the Sharks opened the day with a win over #18 UMES, 997-872. Seniors Kellie Frain and Patricia Kelly led the Sharks, bowling a 237 and a 216 respectively. LIU also had a win over #5 Vanderbilt, 1074-1028. Senior Emily Cavanaugh led LIU in that match with a 243. Freshman Sydney Binkley had a 231, while Frain bowled a 219.
- LIU took on two teams who are currently tied for #10 in the nation, falling to both. The Sharks fell to Stephen F. Austin, 1133-1027 and to #10 Maryville, 1039-1017. Frain led LIU against SFA with a 238, while Cavanaugh bowled a 211 and Binkley had a 201. Against Maryville, Kelly led the Sharks with a 237, and Brittany Lucci bowled a 221.
- LIU capped the day with a win over #20 Wisconsin-Whitewater, 892-877. Lucci led the Sharks with a 207, while Cavanaugh bowled a 202.
- Frain was the team's high average for the day, bowling a 209.6 for five games, ranking her 28th in the field of 110. Cavanaugh ranked 36th in the field with a 206.6 average, while Lucci is ranked 45th, with a 199.6 average.
- The Sharks begin bracket play Sunday against UMES.
