Fencing Goes 5-2 at Vassar Invite

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The LIU women's fencing team went 5-2 at the Vassar Invitational this weekend, beating some tough teams in pool play. 

The Sharks opened with a 24-3 win over Hunter. The sabre squad went 7-2, while foil was 8-1, and epee was a perfect 9-0. LIU followed that up with back-to-back wins over Vassar and Sacred Heart. The Sharks beat host Vassar, 16-11. LIU was led by the sabre squad, who went 7-2 in that match, while foil was 6-3. Vassar took epee, 6-3, but LIU was able to triumph. And then LIU beat Sacred Hearth handily, 21-6. This time, epee was undefeated at 9-0, while foil went 7-2, and sabre eeked out a 5-4 win.

The two losses for LIU came at the hands of Wellsley and Cornell. Wellsley pulled out a close 14-13 win. LIU won sabre, 6-3, but Wellsley took the 6-3 win in foil, coming down to epee. There, Wellsley wonn 5-4, taking the team points.

Cornell handed LIU a 19-8 loss, beating the Sharks in every weapon (6-3 sabre, 7-2 foil, 6-3 epee).

LIU capped the day with two more wins to end on a high note. The Sharks beat Lafayette, 14-13, with 6-3 wins in both foil and epee. And LIU capped the day with a 22-5 win over Fairleigh Dickinson. Foil and epee both took 7-2 wins in their bouts, while sabre won their weapon, 8-1.
