COMRAN, N.Y. – The LIU bowling team had two wins over nationally-ranked opponents at the Adelphi Dezy Strong Classic Saturday, finishing the day with a 3-2 record, in sixth place in the standings heading into Sunday's bracket play.
The Sharks opened the day with a win over Felician in the first of five traditional matches, 981-756.
Francesca Rossi led the Sharks with a 217, while
Brittany Lucci bowled a 212, and
Patricia Kelly bowled a 202.
The next two matches were losses to two of the top teams in the nation. The Sharks fell to tournament leader and #4 nationally-ranked Vanderbilt, 1137-858, and then fell to #10 Stephen F. Austin, 954-895. Senior
Emily Cavanaugh led LIU in that match with a 227.
The Sharks rallied from those two defeats to finish the day with two wins over top 15 ranked opponents who are also in the Northeast Conference. The Sharks beat #8 Fairleigh Dickinson, 960-958, led by Lucci's 229 and
Sarah Orensky's 213.
LIU capped the day with a win over #13 Mount St. Mary's, 907-880. Kelly led the team in that match with a 202.
Lucci lead the team with a 193.6 average for five games, while Cavanaugh averaged a 189.4 for five games.
