THE OPENING FACE-OFF:

  • LIU earned its first victory of the season and first win as the Sharks on Saturday when it defeated Quinnipiac, 13-9.
  • Richie LaCalandra was named an NEC Prime Performer after tallying 12 points over two games last week. LaCalandra currently leads the NEC and ranks 17th in the country in assists per game, handing out 2.33 helpers per contest.
  • The Sharks will close out their non-conference slate against the Minutemen in the team's final tune-up before taking on NJIT on Saturday, March 14.
  • UMass enters Tuesday's matchup with a 4-2 overall record, earning two wins against nationally-ranked opponents in No. 12 Ohio State and No. 1 Yale.
  • Head coach Greg Canella ranks eighth among active DI coaches with 214 career wins

UMASS NOTES:

  • UMass men's lacrosse defeated No. 1 nationally-ranked Yale at Garber Field, 13-10, on Sat., Feb. 29. The win marked the first win over the top-ranked team in the nation in program history.
  • Trailing by two headed into the fourth quarter, UMass fought back for a 9-7 victory at No. 12 Ohio State on Sat., Feb. 15. In the win, the Minutemen scored the final five goals and held Ohio State scoreless for the final 17 minutes.
  • UMass started true-freshman goalie Matt Knote in the cage during the opening six games of the season. Through his first six starts he has logged 352:38, and has compiled a 10.72 goals-against average with 69 saves.
  • Billy Philpott was named to the USILA Team of the Week last week after posting five points during the upset of No. 1 Yale.

SHARK BITES:

  • Will Snelders has recorded a point in all 38 career games, a mark that stands as the 11th-longest mark among Division I players. During his sophomore campaign, Snelders tallied at least three points in every contest and ranked 15th in the nation with 4.69 points per game.
  • Additionally, Snelders scored his 127th career goal against Fairfield. Snelders now sits 23 away from an LIU program record held by Matty Beccaris '16.
  • Will Mark currently ranks second in the nation in saves per game, making 14.8 stops per game. Mark made a career-high 19 saves against the Stags on Tuesday, the most by an LIU goalkeeper in recorded history.
  • The Sharks return over 90-percent of their scoring from 2019 to this season's squad. Seven point scorers left the program after 2019, with the highest point scorer coming in the form of Connor Farrell who tallied 14 points as a senior. The Sharks' top eight goal scorers return to the lineup (Snelders, Jake Gillis, Mike Kadnar, Alex Russell, Thomas Liantonio, Nick Grassa, Dan Foley, Dylan Villari) in 2020. That group combined for 204 goals and 301 total points last season, giving LIU one of the deepest attacks in the NEC this season.
  • A win on Saturday would be the 23rd of head coach Eric Wolf's career and first at the Division I level. Wolf has compiled a 22-15 (.594) record, including two-consecutive seasons with 10 or more wins.
