Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Long Island University men's basketball team won their second-straight Northeast Conference game at home Saturday afternoon, knocking out the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, 84-70. The Sharks (7-9, 2-1 NEC) had four players score in double digits, led by 20 points from senior
Jashaun Agosto.
SHARK QUOTES
"That was a great, great home win by our team," head coach
Derek Kellogg said postgame. "I thought our guys played pretty close to 40 minutes of LIU basketball. We shared the ball, we played really good defense, and I thought we showed some toughness and resiliency in the second half when Fairleigh Dickinson came back and made a run. I'm really proud of the way
Jashaun Agosto played; I think that was his best game since I've been here as a head coach. I'm excited for our guys. I thought the hard work and attention to detail in practice carried over in these last couple of games."
GAME BREAKDOWN
FDU would grab an early lead on the Sharks, 4-2, but senior
Julian Batts hit a three-pointer to put the home team up, 5-4, and LIU never looked back. Batts' basket sparked a 14-0 run over the next four minutes that would put LIU on top, 16-4. That run would eventually extend to a 26-7 outscoring effort, as the Sharks took a 28-11 lead with nine minutes left in the first half. FDU started to get some scoring done, but LIU held a comfortable lead at the halftime break, 46-30.
But the Knights weren't done fighting. The visitors came out in the second half, and capitalized on the fact that LIU's shots weren't falling as frequently. Over the first ten minutes of the second half, FDU put together a 20-7 run that would cut the lead to just six points, 58-52 with 9:25 to play.
But then senior
Jashaun Agosto hit a three-pointer at 9:08, and senior
Raiquan Clark got back to back baskets that put the Knights comfortably out of threatening territory, 65-54. Agosto would hit another three with 5:18 to play, but it was sophomore
Virshon Cotton's dunk at 4:12 that made the momentum shift permanent in favor of the home team. Sophomore
Jermaine Jackson Jr. also hit a three with 2:06 on the clock that helped seal the deal, and in the end, the Sharks took the emphatic win, 84-70.
