Wolf Announces Runkel, Rotanz as Assistant Coaches

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Head coach Eric Wolf announced the addition of Jack Runkel and Tim Rotanz as assistant men's lacrosse coaches on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Runkel and Rotanz join the LIU staff for its return to Division I competition in 2020. Runkel joins the staff as a defensive assistant and recruiting coordinator, while Rotanz comes to LIU as an offensive assistant.

"I am ecstatic to have Jack and Tim join our program," Wolf commented. "First and foremost, they are awesome people that our student-athletes are going to love spending time with. They both come from tremendously successful programs having won a national championship during their playing careers, while building off of those campaigns into their coaching careers. I have the utmost confidence in their abilities to inspire and help lead our group, as we take the next step as a program."

Runkel most recently served as an assistant coach at Manhattan College for the past two seasons. At Manhattan, Runkel helped coach the defense and special teams units. During the 2019 season, he helped mentor first team All-MAAC goalkeeper Brendan Krebs and also assisted with the top-ranked man-down unit in Division I during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.  Prior to Manhattan, Runkel was a volunteer assistant coach at Yale University where he helped the Eli's to two-consecutive Ivy League Championships in 2016 and 2017. He began his coaching career at Georgetown University as a volunteer assistant coach in 2015.

A 2014 graduate of Loyola University (Md.), Runkel received USILA All-America honors as a goalkeeper and helped the program win its first NCAA Division I National Championship in 2012. He was named to the 2012 NCAA All-Tournament Team and also earned Patriot League Goalie of the Year accolades in 2014. Runkel and the 2012 Loyola defense hold the record for the fewest amount of goals given up in a National Championship game (3).

Rotanz comes to LIU after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Marquette University for one season.

Outside of his coaching career, Rotanz brings a wealth of playing experience to Brookville. He currently plays professional lacrosse in the Premiere Lacrosse League for Whipsnakes LC, appearing in four games during the 2019 season. A 2018 graduate of the University of Maryland, Rotanz won a National Championship with the Terrapins in 2017 and earned All-America accolades twice. Appearing in 70 games during his tenure, Rotanz amassed 109 points behind 67 goals and 42 assists. His 33 goals as a junior rank 12th all-time at Maryland, while his 11 goals during the 2017 NCAA Tournament rank fourth and helped him earn all-tournament team honors during the championship run.
