MADISON, N.J.— The Long Island University women's fencing team concluded its fall schedule with two wins at the Drew Rangers Holiday Invitational on Sunday. The Sharks earned a 16-9 win over Hunter College in round two and a 21-5 victory over Yeshiva in round four.
LIU opened its match against the Hawks with a 4-3 decision in the sabre event. Sophomore
Karen Velasquez earned three bout wins in the foil event as the Sharks were edged 5-4. In the epee event, sophomores
Alina Chen and
Grace Scura both picked up a pair of wins as the Sharks earned an 8-1 decision against the shorthanded Hawks.
In the Sharks victory over Yeshiva, sophomore
Jasmine Hagans recorded two wins in the sabre event. The foil team of Velasquez,
Manny Kaur and
Madysen D'Angelo all earned bout victories along the way to an 8-1 decision against the two-member squad for the Maccabees. LIU sealed the match with another 8-1 decision in the epee event. Chen and Scura won all three of their bouts and freshman
Faith Ferraro added two wins for the Sharks.
