POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.— The Long Island University women's fencing team traveled north to compete in the Vassar Invitational on Sunday. The Sharks earned three victories at the meet, defeating Hunter College, Lafayette and FDU.
LIU opened the meet with a 18-6 victory over Hunter College. LIU's epee squad went 9-0 against the Hawks with sophomores
Alina Chen and
Grace Scura along with freshman
Faith Ferraro earning two wins each along with a forfeit as Hunter competed with two fencers. Sophomore
Jasmine Hagans earned a victory in the sabre event, with LIU earning a 5-4 decision as Hunter had one fencer in the event. The foil team earned a 5-4 decision over the Hawks with sophomore
Karen Velasquez and freshman
Madysen D'Angelo each winning a bout against the shorthanded Hawks.
The Sharks closed out the meet strong with wins over Lafayette and FDU. Against the Leopards, LIU earned a 9-0 decision in the foil event by forfeit. The epee team then swept the competition with all three fencers earning three wins. LIU earned a win in the final round over the Knights by forfeit.
