BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The Long Island University women's fencing team opened the 2019-20 season hosting the LIU Invitational on Sunday at the Steinberg Wellness Center. The Sharks earned a pair of victories on the day, picking up wins over Hunter College and Fairleigh Dickinson.
LIU also competed against Wellesley College, Drew University, NJIT and Wagner in the seven team event.
The Sharks kicked off the day with a 21-6 win over Hunter College. Sophomore
Karen Velasquez led the foil team with three wins and freshman
Madysen D'Angelo added two wins for the 5-4 event decision. LIU's epée team of sophomores

Grace Scura along with freshman
Faith Ferraro earned a 9-0 sweep over the Hawks. The sabre team consisting of junior
Danielle Haye, sophomore
Jasmine Hagans and freshman
Nikkita Louis were equally dominant, earning a 8-1 decision. Hagans and Haye earned three wins while Louis added a pair of wins.
LIU matched up against challenging foes, in NJIT and Wagner in rounds three and four. The Sharks bounced back against FDU with a 14-13 decision. FDU earned a 6-3 decision in the foil, with LIU getting wins from all three fencers in senior
Manny Kaur, D'Angelo and Velasquez. It was a tight contest in the epée with FDU earning a 5-4 decision. The Sharks closed out with a 7-2 mark in the sabre to take the match. Haye led LIU with three wins while Hagans and Louis earned two wins a piece.
Tough bouts against Wellesley and Drew closed out the opening event of the season for LIU.
