Box Score HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – In a showdown between local foes, the Long Island University men's soccer team fell to Hofstra University 2-1 Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore
Athanasios Coutroumpas scored for the second-straight match for LIU, and earned at least one point for the third-consecutive match. Freshman
Papa Ndoye tallied three shots on goal while junior
Camarri Johnson had one shot on goal and freshman
Keanu Tuart had three shots. Senior goalkeeper
Matias Pesallaccia finished with four saves.
Ndoye almost gave the Sharks an early lead, but his shot to the bottom center in the sixth minute was saved. Pesallaccia likewise had a strong start to the match, saving a shot to the bottom center in the 13
th minute and another in the 19
th. Ndoye would shoot again in the 20
th minute, but his shot was saved in the bottom left.
Graduate student
Stefan Faistenauer sent a shot just high in the 33
rd minute then Ndoye had another shot to the bottom center in the 35
th.
In the 42
nd minute, Pesallaccia produced a spectacular save after the Pride fired a rocket to the bottom center on a free kick. Just moments later, in the 44
th minute Coutroumpas had a free kick from several steps out from the right side of the top box and sent the ball past Hofstra's goalkeeper to the back right for the opening goal of the match. The Sharks would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Sharks had another impressive start to the second half and generated several scoring opportunities early. Five minutes into the half Grande missed to the right then Tuart followed with a shot on goal just one minute after.
Johnson would shoot to the top left in the 52
nd minute, but his shot was saved. After checking into the match in the 60
th minute, Tagios made an immediate impact as he sent a header just high of the cross bar in the 63
rd minute.
Sophomore
Xavier Verdu would record his first shot of the match in the 70
th minute but one minute later the Pride would tie it up with their first goal of the contest. The Sharks were then forced to play a man down, as Tuart received a red card in the 73
rd minute.
Pesallaccia made another tough save in the bottom center in the 73
rd minute and while Parish almost gave LIU the lead in the 75
th minute, his shot missed right and the Pride would score again in the 78
th minute.
Despite the Sharks' best efforts down the stretch, Hofstra held on for the 2-1 victory.
