LIU DANCE TEAM AUDITIONS

Thank you for your interest in joining the 2026–2027 LIU Dance team! Below are guidelines for the audition process. All candidates are required to attend the in-person audition in April 2026. Stay tuned for more information!

Virtual auditions are available for out-of-state candidates via video submission (see below for more information).

ELIGIBILITY
All LIU Dance team members must:

  • Maintain full-time enrollment status at Long Island University
    • 12+ credits per semester as an undergraduate student
    • 9+ credits per semester as a graduate student
  • Maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale


CLINICS
There will be a mandatory LIU Dance Team Audition Clinic in April 2026 for all athletes who wish to be considered for the 2026–2027 Dance Team. Prospective recruits are highly encouraged to attend at least two LIU Dance Team clinics prior to auditioning. Visit our Clinics page for more information.

IN-PERSON AUDITION GUIDELINES

All candidates must complete a brief questionnaire (view below) and perform three dances that demonstrate aptitude and techniques in Pom, Hip Hop, and Jazz. 

All candidates must bring a head shot photo (does not need to be professional) of themselves and their Jazz solo music. All candidates are expected to wear all black apparel and ensure their hair and makeup are “Game Day-Ready.”

CHOREOGRAPHY
Choreography for Jazz and Pom routines will be taught at the mandatory clinic on Saturday, April 26, and will be reviewed and performed/auditioned in groups on Sunday, April 27.

Choreography for Hip Hop will be taught on Sunday, April 27, and will be performed/auditioned in groups later in the day.

JAZZ SOLO
Successful candidates are expected to prepare and perform a 45-60 second Jazz solo displaying the below skills. Candidates are not required to include all skills but must display their best technique and performance quality. DO NOT ATTEMPT any of the below skills without prior experience.

Music selection for the Jazz solo is determined by the candidate. Please ensure the song is appropriate and have fun! We cannot wait to see your performance.

JUMPS

  • Left/Right jeté
  • Toe touch
  • Second position leap (across the floor)
  • Calypso
  • Turning disc
  • Firebird
  • Left/Right tilt jump
  • Various switch leaps (arabesque, second, tilt)

TURNS

  • Left/Right double, triple, and quad pirouettes
  • A la seconde turns (at least four)
  • Advanced a la seconde turn combinations (i.e., floats, pirouettes, attitude turns, changing spots, etc.)
  • Leg hold turns

TRICKS

  • Kip up
  • Head stand
  • Headspring
  • Rubber band
  • Aerials (side and/or front)
  • 540

 

VIRTUAL AUDITION GUIDELINES

Virtual auditions are available only for out-of-state candidates or candidates with an excused prior obligation previously approved by the coaching staff. Virtual auditions are conducted via video submissions. Video submissions must showcase the candidate's strengths as a student-athlete in a professional manner (i.e., appearance, collegiate, school pride and spirit, etc.). All candidates are expected to wear all black apparel and ensure hair and makeup are “Game Day-Ready.”

Video submissions may be uploaded to YouTube, Google Drive, or DropBox. Complete the below questionnaire and send links of uploaded video submissions to Head Coach Cassandra McMillan at dance@liu.edu.

VIDEO SUBMISSION CONTENT

Video submissions must include a recorded performance of LIU choreography for Pom, Hip Hop, and Jazz routines (click the button below to view the approved LIU choreography). Video submissions must also include a recorded 45-60 second Jazz solo following the guidelines listed above.

  • Display strong and sharp Pom motions and techniques
  • Demonstrate “spirit” and the ability to hype crowds before and after the fight song

 

HIP HOP PERFORMANCE | Party

  • Display sharp and proper Hip Hop techniques
  • Demonstrate strong stylistic choices


JAZZ PERFORMANCE | Indestructible

  • Display sharp and proper Jazz techniques
  • Demonstrate strong stylistic choices


TIPS FOR BEST VIDEO QUALITY

  • Professionally produced videos are not required.
  • Ensure a clear background and bright lighting.
  • Ensure there is adequate space to properly execute skills.
