BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Long Island University softball team (14-26, 13-1 NEC) split Tuesday's doubleheader against Wagner College, defeating the Seahawks 4-1 after falling to Wagner 6-0 in the opening game of the doubleheader.
While Wagner opened scoring with a solo home run in the top of the third inning, the Sharks responded to tie the game at one with an RBI single by sophomore Hannah Burnett in the bottom of the fourth. LIU took its first lead of the day with a sacrifice fly by junior Jaedyn Lincoln in the bottom of the fifth.
Sophomore Ava Fairbanks added another run in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a Seahawk error. An RBI double by junior Lily Hinkle extended LIU's lead to its eventual 4-1 final score.
Burnett and senior Gigi Clavel led LIU with two hits apiece, while Hinkle, Burnett, and Fairbanks all stole bases. Fairbanks earned the win, her fifth of the year, pitching four innings with three hits surrendered, four strikeouts, and no earned runs.
LIU fell 6-0 to Wagner in Tuesday's opening game. Hinkle led the Sharks with two hits, while senior Nyae' Villalta, Lincoln, sophomore Samantha Gallegos, and Burnett all tallied hits.
The Sharks close their series against Wagner on Wednesday, April 8, at 12 p.m.
