BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Long Island University softball team (15-26, 14-1 NEC) earned a series win over Wagner College on Wednesday, defeating the Seahawks at the LIU Softball Complex in Brooklyn.
LIU went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single by junior Lily Hinkle, sending home sophomore Samantha Gallegos for the first run of the ballgame. Wagner answered in the top of the third inning, first scoring on a two-RBI double before adding an RBI single to take a 3-1 lead over the Sharks.
Wagner's lead was short-lived, as sophomore Hannah Burnett delivered a three-run home run to left field, sending home senior Gigi Clavel and Gallegos. The homer was Burnett's second of the season, previously going out of the park in LIU's win over Le Moyne on March 14.
Burnett wasn't done, following up with a solo homer in her next at-bat, putting the Sharks ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning. This marked Burnett's first career multi-home run game, and tied her career-high in RBI in a game with four.
Wagner scratched across a run in the top of the seventh inning, before sophomore Ava Fairbanks ended the game on a strikeout to seal LIU's 5-4 win.
Burnett and Hinkle tied for a team-high two hits, while Burnett led LIU with four RBI. Fairbanks earned the win on Wednesday, her sixth of the year, pitching four innings with three hits surrendered, one earned run, and seven strikeouts.
LIU returns to action on Tuesday, April 14, at 6 p.m. to take on Rutgers University on the road.
