BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Long Island University men's volleyball team (6-9, 1-1 NEC) bounced back to defeat Roberts Wesleyan University on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Red Hawks 3-2 in five sets.
After the Red Hawks claimed Wednesday's opening set, LIU responded by tying the match at one with a 25-17 win in the second set. Senior Kale Spencer closed out the set with back-to-back service aces, two of his five aces in the second frame.
LIU held a 20-18 lead over Roberts Wesleyan in the third set, and scored the final five points to go up 2-1 in the match. Freshman Ike Vernon recorded two of LIU's final five points with kills.
Following the Red Hawks winning the fourth set 25-20, LIU opened the final set with an early 4-1 lead, highlighted by two early kills by sophomore Owen Holowecky. While the Red Hawks battled back, Spencer closed out the match with a kill to give LIU a 15-12 win, winning the match 3-2.
Vernon led LIU with a career-high 21 kills, while Spencer was close behind with 20 kills. Spencer tied his season high with five aces, Holowecky recorded a career-high 52 assists, and redshirt sophomore Heston Cabinian and senior Slater Fuhrman tied for a team-high 12 digs. Senior Vanja Petrasinovic and Holowecky tied for a team-high four total blocks.
