MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — The Long Island University men's volleyball team (8-9, 1-1 NEC) claimed its second consecutive sweep on Tuesday evening, defeating Barry University in three sets at the Barry U Invite.
LIU claimed 25-17 and 25-15 wins in the first two sets, jumping out to early four-plus point leads in both frames. A kill by freshman Ike Vernon put the Sharks up 2-0 in the match to close out the second set.
The Sharks were down 20-17 to the Buccaneers late in the third set, but six consecutive LIU points turned the tides, including a pair of kills by senior Vanja Petrasinovic. Vernon again closed out the third set, as his kill gave LIU its 25-22 win.
Vernon (15), redshirt sophomore Heston Cabinian (12), and senior Kale Spencer (10) all totaled double-digit kills in the win, while Cabinian led LIU with nine digs. Sophomore Owen Holowecky recorded 37 assists, while Vernon and Petrasinovic each had five total blocks, including three solo apiece.
LIU closed out the Barry U Invite and non-conference play on Thursday, March 12, at 2 p.m. when it takes on Edward Waters University.
