RIVERDALE, N.Y. — The Long Island University men's volleyball team (10-11, 2-3 NEC) climbed back from being down after three sets to defeat Manhattan University 3-2 on Friday night, claiming its second conference win of the season.
Manhattan and LIU split the first two sets, with the Jaspers first winning 25-19 before the Sharks tied the match with a 25-23 win in the second set. However, Manhattan took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-22 win in the third set.
Down 2-0 early in the fourth set, LIU scored three straight points to take the lead, and would not trail again in the fourth set. Manhattan would go on to tie the set six different times, though the Sharks rode off to a 25-22 win to tie the match at two.
The Jaspers scored the first point of Friday's final set, though a 5-1 LIU scoring run put the Sharks ahead for good; LIU would eventually win the fifth set 15-7, capping off the win with a kill by senior Vanja Petrasinovic.
Senior Kale Spencer led LIU with 22 kills, posting a .459 hitting percentage, while redshirt sophomores Blake Krapf (14 kills) and Heston Cabinian (10) also finished in double figures. Sophomore Owen Holowecky led LIU with a career-high 61 assists, while Cabinian totaled a match-high 10 digs. Holowecky and Petrasinovic tied for a team-high three total blocks.
LIU returns to the court on Saturday, March 28, to host Manhattan at 1 p.m. in Brooklyn.
