BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Long Island University men's volleyball team (11-11, 3-3 NEC) evened both its overall and NEC records with Saturday's sweep of Manhattan University, defeating the Jaspers in three sets in Brooklyn.
Trailing 14-13 midway through the first set, a five-point scoring run put the Sharks back on top of the Jaspers, as LIU eventually claimed the first set 25-20 off a kill by freshman Ike Vernon.
LIU never trailed in the second frame, leading by as many as 11 points. The Sharks scored the first four points in the set, including a pair of service aces by senior Kale Spencer, as LIU won the second frame 25-16.
While the Jaspers led 13-11 midway through Saturday's final set, LIU marched on a 7-1 scoring run to take an 18-14 lead, eventually winning the set 25-18 to claim a 3-0 match win over Manhattan.
Vernon led LIU with 17 kills, posting a hitting percentage of .500 in the win. Spencer led LIU with six digs and three service aces, while senior Vanja Petrasinovic posted four total blocks in the win. Sophomore Owen Holowecky recorded 30 assists in the win.
LIU returns to action on Friday, April 3, at 6 p.m. in a road match against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
