BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Long Island University men's volleyball team (3-5, 0-0 NEC) got back in the win column with a sweep of American International College on Friday night, defeating the Yellow Jackets 3-0.
LIU and AIC stood tied at 15 through the first set, as each team traded points over the next six serves. Following being tied at 18, the Sharks outscored the Yellow Jackets 7-2 down the stretch to win the first set 25-20.
The Sharks dominated the second set, defeating AIC 25-6 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match. LIU hit .706 as a team in the second set, while the Yellow Jackets hit -.391 as a team.
LIU claimed another early lead in the third and final set, though the Yellow Jackets battle back to take a 19-18 lead late in the set; however, as each team continued to trade points, LIU scored the final two points on back-to-back kills by senior Kale Spencer and redshirt freshman Agustin Espiga.
Spencer and redshirt sophomore Heston Cabinian tied for a team-high nine kills, while sophomore Owen Holowecky led the Sharks with 28 assists. Senior Slater Fuhrman led the Sharks with 11 digs, and freshman Kristóf Kövessy had four total blocks.
LIU returns to the court on Thursday, Feb. 12, when they travel to face St. Thomas Aquinas College at 6 p.m.
