BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Long Island University men's volleyball team (2-4, 0-0 NEC) bounced back with a win over Dominican University of New York on Wednesday night, defeating the Chargers in three sets.
LIU came out strong in the opening set, taking an early 4-0 lead. The Sharks led by as many as six points four times in Wednesday's first set before eventually claiming a 25-19 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set was back-and-forth between the Sharks and Chargers, as the score stood tied at 22 late; however, a late kill by senior Kale Spencer combined with two blocks by senior Drew McNellis, senior Isaac Benka, and Spencer, allowed the Sharks to end the set in a 25-23 win.
While the Sharks held an 18-12 lead late in the third set, Dominican battle back to tie the third set at 24; LIU took the lead back on a kill by redshirt sophomore Heston Cabinian before winning the set 26-24 on a block by junior Roei Horovitz and Benka.
Spencer led LIU with 16 kills, while freshman Ike Vernon also finished the match with double-digit kills (10). Benka's six blocks was a game-high, while Horovitz led LIU with 38 assists. Senior Slater Fuhrman paced the Sharks with 10 digs in the win.
LIU returns to the court on Friday, Jan. 30, in a road match against NJIT. First serve is at 6 p.m. in Newark, New Jersey.
