BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Long Island University men's basketball team (15-8, 9-1 NEC) won its fourth consecutive game on Thursday night, staving off a late University of New Haven comeback attempt to defeat the Chargers 60-55 in Brooklyn.
The Sharks held strong on the defensive end in the first of Thursday's contest, holding the Chargers to under 20 first-half points and taking a 29-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.
While LIU extended its lead to 20 points on a dunk by sophomore Shadrak Lasu, the Chargers began to chip away at the LIU lead; nine minutes into the second half, LIU's lead was down to nine points. An 8-0 New Haven scoring run cut the LIU lead to one point with 7:12 remaining, with the Chargers later tying the game at 43.
LIU retaliated with a 9-0 scoring run over the next three minutes of play, capped off with a dunk by senior Greg Gordon to take a 52-43 lead with just over two minutes remaining. Graduate student Jamal Fuller scored LIU's final six points of the game, sealing LIU's five-point win.
Redshirt senior Malachi Davis led all scorers with 18 points, while Fuller (13 points) and Lasu (11) each finished scoring in double figures. Lasu collected eight rebounds in the win, while Gordon led LIU with three assists.
The Sharks remain at home on Saturday, Feb. 7, when they host Stonehill College at 4 p.m. at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
