EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - The Long Island University women's ice hockey team (8-12-1, 6-8-1 NEWHA) exploded for three third period goals to down Saint Michael's College (1-18-0, 1-14-0 NEWHA), 4-1, on Friday afternoon at Northwell Health Ice Center.
Grace Babington led the Sharks with three points. Junior goaltender
Clara Kammholz stopped 30 of 31 shots on goal.
LIU opened the scoring in the second period when Babington scored, assisted by
Sam Mathe at 3:09 of the frame. But less than a minute later, St. Michael's answered, tying the score 1-1.
In the third, the Sharks broke the game open.
Crosby Wildfong pounced on a loose puck near the crease and found the back of the net, giving LIU a 2-1 lead with 4:50 remaining in the game. Babington and
Drew Dyczkowski assisted Wildfong's goal.
Moments later, at 16:48 of the period,
Anya Weilandt scored off a rebound, with assists by
Ryane Kearns and
Addison Robillard, stretching LIU's lead to 3-1.
With just over a minute remaining in the game, Dyczkowski scored an empty netter, assisted by Babington, to seal the 4-1 final margin.
In total, the Sharks outshot 49-31 and won 25 of 47 faceoffs.
LIU returns to action on Saturday afternoon at home in the second game of this weekend's pair with Saint Michael's. Saturday is Youth Hockey Day at the rink, featuring a postgame autograph session with LIU players. Admission is free for children ages 18 and under, and tickets for accompanying adults are just $5.
