BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Long Island University women's basketball team (13-8, 8-2 NEC) secured another conference win with Saturday's 78-50 win over Central Connecticut State University, outscoring the Blue Devils by nearly 30 points in the second half.
The Sharks never trailed in Saturday's opening frame, holding a close 12-11 lead after the first 10 minutes of the game. After CCSU took a quick lead on their opening possession of the second quarter, LIU quickly took the lead back on a three-pointer by junior Solangelei Akridge, maintaining that lead through the remainder of the first half and holding a 30-21 lead at halftime.
LIU pushed its lead to double digits with a layup by graduate student Kionna Gaines on its opening possession of the second half, extending the lead to 20 points entering the fourth quarter before earning an eventual 28-point win.
Five Sharks finished in double figures, led by 14 points from senior Kadidia Toure. She was joined by junior Janessa Williams and Gaines (13 points each), and graduate student Hannah Humphrey and senior Isabella Tañedo (11 points each).
Toure, freshman Leila Nuñez, and sophomore Laura Molnarova each collected a team-high six rebounds, while Toure led the Sharks with four assists.
LIU returns to the floor on Thursday, Feb. 5, on the road against the University of New Haven at 6 p.m.
