WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Long Island University women's basketball team (14-8, 9-2 NEC) earned its third consecutive double-digit win on Thursday night, defeating the University of New Haven 65-46 on the road.
LIU found itself down early on Thursday, as New Haven took an early 8-0 lead nearly midway through the first quarter; however, LIU mounted a 14-5 scoring run to take the lead, capped off by a three-pointer by senior Isabella Tañedo to take a 14-13 lead into the second quarter.
The Sharks continued where the left off, maintaining a steady two-possession lead throughout the second quarter before taking a 33-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
After being up by nine points at halftime, the Sharks outscored New Haven 32-22 over the final 20 minutes of play to seal their eventual 19-point road win.
Junior Janessa Williams led LIU with a game-high 16 points in the win, followed by senior Kadidia Toure and graduate student Kionna Gaines, who each scored 12 points against the Chargers. Toure led LIU with 10 rebounds, recording her eighth double-double of the season, while freshman Camille Wiley assisted on a game-high four assists.
LIU stays on the road on Saturday, Feb. 7, when it travels to Stonehill College to face the Skyhawks at 1 p.m.
