BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Long Island University women's volleyball team (5-7, 2-0 NEC) earned its third consecutive win with a 3-0 sweep of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (3-13, 0-2 American East) on Tuesday night, the final non-conference matchup of the season for the Sharks.
Both teams found themselves tied at 18 in a back-and-forth opening set, until the Sharks went on a four-point scoring run that gave LIU the lead, eventually winning the first set 25-20 over the Highlanders on a kill by senior Karly Klaer. LIU closed out the first set by outscoring NJIT 7-2.
The Sharks never trailed in the second set, doubling up the Highlanders with an 18-9 lead on a kill by junior Sara van Gisteren. After a brief NJIT scoring run, the Sharks took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 win in the second set, closing things out with a strong kill by junior Sara Garcia.
LIU came out swinging in the third set, scoring on the first three rallies before taking a late 24-15 lead in the set. While the Highlanders battled to bring the set within four, LIU claimed its third consecutive victory with a 25-20 score in the third frame, winning the match 3-0.
Tuesday's win was the fifth for the Sharks in their last six matches.
van Gisteren led LIU with 20 kills, while junior Yasmeen Muhammad paced the Sharks in blocks with nine total. Klaer racked up 35 assists, while sophomore Miabella Musignac's 19 digs were a team high.
LIU travels to Le Moyne College on Friday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. for an NEC matchup with the Dolphins.
