BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — LIU showed resilience and scored a season-tying high sixteen runs, but ultimately fell to Manhattan 18-16 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Sharks fell behind early, allowing ten runs in the first and found themselves down 12-1 heading into the bottom of the second. That's when LIU began to claw back, putting up a five-spot in the inning. The second inning was highlighted by
Tyler Benick's first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to help his team narrow its deficit to six.
With Manhattan leading 12-6, the Sharks continued to chip away in the third inning.
Jacob Pipercic hit a two-run double, pulling his team within four. Down by six (14-8) again in the fifth, the Sharks scored five runs in an inning for the second time in the game, including clutch hits from NEC Co-Player of the Week
Ryan Rivera, who had a two-RBI double, and another RBI from Benick via a run-scoring single.
The two teams would continue to go back and forth, with LIU eventually falling in extra innings. Rivera and Benick led LIU with four RBI apiece, and
Jarod Wade led the team with three hits in a 3-for-4 performance, also scoring four runs.
Jack Ryan went 1-for-4, scoring four runs and driving in one.
LIU will return to the field on Thursday, April 17, visiting Norfolk State at 3 p.m.
