Norfolk, Va. — Garrett Yawn struck out thirteen and LIU came back from behind to beat Norfolk State 4-3 on Thursday afternoon.
Surrendering three runs in the sixth inning, Yawn tossed an otherwise stellar start, giving up six hits and not allowing a single walk while striking out thirteen – a new season-high following double-digit strikeouts in each of his last two starts (11 and 12, respectively).
Despite trailing 3-0, the offense backed up Yawn in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs to tie the game.
Noah Sorensen started things off with a solo home run, then
Tyler Benick singled in a run.
Jarod Wade would be hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the inning to tie things up.
Joseph Durso's solo shot in the ninth –his fourth home run of the season – gave the Sharks a 4-3 lead and ultimately, the win.
LIU and Norfolk State will play again Friday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
