BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Jack Power flashed his all too familiar heroics once again, lifting LIU to a 9-8 walk-off win over Central Connecticut State in its home opener on Saturday afternoon.
Power hit two home runs in a game for the second time this season, the exclamation point of his efforts being a walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the ninth to send the Sharks home victorious following a back-and-forth battle with CCSU.
Before Power's prowess ended things on a positive note, LIU found itself down 3-0 in the third inning. The Sharks came to bat in the bottom of the third and broke out with a six-run rally.
Benjamin Fierenzi helped get his team on the board with an RBI single to score
Chandler Ketchup and advance
Cord Dobrinski.
Noah Sorensen followed that up with an RBI single of his own to bring Dobrinski around and leave two ducks on the pond for Power. Stepping up to the plate in the third, Power launched his first home-run of the day – a three run bomb – to give the Sharks a 5-3 lead. Reigning Rookie of the Week
Mason Breton would later hit an RBI single to help LIU's lead grow to 6-3 by the end of the inning.
The Sharks continued to add to their lead in the fourth, following another RBI single by Fierenzi and a bases-loaded walk to
Joseph Durso, allowing the home team to forge ahead 8-3.
CCSU would chip away at LIU's lead as the game continued, eventually tying things up at eight by the sixth inning.
That's where the score would stay until the ninth, thanks to a solid relief outing from
RJ Latkowski. The senior struck out five and would keep CCSU in check through four innings despite allowing two runs early in his appearance in the sixth.
This set the stage for Power to have another heroic moment in the bottom of the ninth, hitting the game-winning homer for his team-leading fifth of the season.
LIU and CCSU will take the field once again in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 9, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
