MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Long Island University men's volleyball team won back-to-back games at the Barry U Invite on Friday evening, defeating both Roosevelt University and Barry University with set scores of 3-1.
LIU opened the day with a matchup against Roosevelt, defeating the Lakers after dropping the first set, 25-20, and winning the second set, 25-22, the third set, 25-15, and the fourth set, 25-21.
Three Sharks finished the game against Roosevelt with double-digit kills; freshman outside hitter Lucas Ramos, playing in his home state of Florida, led the Sharks with 19 and was followed by sophomore setter Roei Horovitz with 12 kills and junior outside hitter Chase Celichowski's 11 kills. Junior middle blocker Isaac Benka had a team-high five blocks, senior setter Luca Holanda led the Sharks with 41 assists and Celichowski paced LIU with 12 digs against Roosevelt.
Taking on Barry in the second match of the day, LIU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after winning the first set 25-22 and the second set 25-18; however, the Buccaneers fought back to claim a 25-23 win over the Sharks in the third set. It didn't take long for the Sharks to refocus after losing the set, bouncing back with a 27-25 win in the fourth frame to win the match 3-1.
Junior outside hitter Vanja Petrasinovic led the Sharks in both kills (18) and digs (10) in the win over Barry. Junior outside hitter Kale Spencer and Benka also had double-digit kills, finishing with 15 and 11, respectively.
The Sharks return the court on Saturday in the final game of the Barry U Invite, taking on St. John Fisher University at 4 p.m.
