BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Long Island University men's volleyball team used all five sets to take care of business against Daemen University on Friday, defeating the Wildcats 3-2 in a Northeast Conference matchup to improve to 14-5 overall and 2-1 in the NEC.
The opening set of Friday's match was a closely fought, back-and-forth affair; after the Sharks tied the match at 24 with a kill by junior outside hitter Kale Spencer, both teams traded leads until the Sharks scored back-to-back points, ending the set with a 33-31 win off another kill by Spencer.
Daemen didn't go down without a fight, as the Wildcats overcame an early LIU lead to win the second set 25-22, tying the match at 1-1.
The Sharks owned the third set; after Daemen tied the match at 6-6, LIU went on an 11-1 scoring run to take a dominant lead in the set, later taking a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-16 win in the third frame.
After the Wildcats won the fourth set 25-17, the Sharks found themselves down 7-2 early in the fifth set; however, an 8-3 scoring run allowed LIU to take the lead in the final frame before winning 15-12.
Spencer led the Sharks with 20 kills, followed by junior outside hitter Chase Celichowski with 13 and nine from junior outside hitter Christopher Knowles. Sophomore setter Roei Horovitz had a team-high 45 assists, while Spencer paced LIU in both digs (10) and service aces (6).
LIU returns to the court Saturday afternoon for another game against the Wildcats, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
