BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Long Island University men's volleyball team dominated in Saturday's match against Daemen University, defeating the Wildcats 3-0 to improve to 15-5 overall and 3-1 in the Northeast Conference.
Saturday's win came less than 24 hours after the Sharks defeated the Wildcats 3-2 on Friday night.
"It's always good when you can pick up two conference wins in a weekend," LIU men's volleyball Head Coach Justin Beaumont said. "Daemen is an awesome team, and I'm proud of how our guys responded to playing a great opponent."
The Sharks opened the first set on a high note, jumping out to a 10-6 lead before going on an 11-5 scoring run, eventually winning the match 25-15 on a kill by junior outside hitter Christopher Knowles.
Daemen fought back in the second set, as both teams found themselves tied at 23 late in the set; LIU went up 2-0 in the match after scoring the final two points of the second frame, scoring on an attack error by the Wildcats before junior outside hitter Kale Spencer ended the set with a kill, giving the Sharks a 25-23 win.
LIU got off to another strong start in the third and final frame, jumping out to an early 10-4 lead before Daemen fought back, bringing the score to 15-13 in favor of the Sharks. However, LIU outscored the Wildcats 10-5 down the stretch of the set to walk away with a 25-19 win, sweeping Daemen in three sets.
Spencer led LIU with 17 kills, followed by junior Chase Celichowski with nine kills and eight kills from junior middle blocker Isaac Benka. Sophomore setter Roei Horovitz recorded a team-high 33 assists and 11 digs while Benka led the Sharks with five total blocks.
LIU travels to Buffalo, N.Y. for a two-game set against D'Youville next weekend, with the first match beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, April 4.
