Six Run Ninth Inning Rally Propels LIU Past Delaware State

Ryan Rivera & Cord Dobrinski each homered, and Jack Power & Jacob Pipercic drove in key runs in come from behind win for LIU

Dover, Del. — LIU defeated Delaware State in thrilling fashion Friday afternoon, winning 8-2 after coming from behind to score all eight runs between the eighth and ninth innings.

Garett Yawn pitched a stellar game for the Sharks, tossing six innings in what could arguably be considered his best outing of the season. He struck out a season-high seven while allowing just one earned run on six hits and two walks – each of which matched season-lows (bests) for the pitcher.

Despite a strong performance from Yawn, LIU found themselves down 2-0 heading into the eighth inning. That's when the bats truly came alive for the Sharks. Ryan Rivera helped tie the game up with a two-run home run to left. The junior's second homer of the campaign added to his team-leading RBI total.

The ninth inning featured a six-run rally for the Sharks as they secured the pivotal lead. Jack Power drove in the first run of the inning with a bases-loaded single. Another run followed via a Ryan Rivera sacrifice fly – this gave him three on the day and a total of fifteen on the year thus far. The merry-go-round continued as Jacob Pipercic reached base on an error and yet another run came around, giving LIU a 5-2 lead. That's when Cord Dobrinski homered in his second straight game – a three-run shot – to give the Sharks the 8-2 lead they rode to victory the rest of the way.

LIU and Delaware State will continue their three-game series on Saturday, March 22, matching up at 1 p.m.
