Janessa Williams Nets Career High as LIU Falls Short at Wagner

Williams scores 23 points, Sirviva Legions hits double figures for 18th consecutive game

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.Janessa Williams led the Sharks with a career-high 23 points, but the Long Island University women's basketball team fell short versus Wagner College, 66-58, on Thursday night at the Spiro Sports Center.

Sirviva Legions followed Williams with 11 points and tied season highs with five assists and four steals. It was Legions' league-best 18th consecutive game in double figures. Kaiden Glenn also scored 11 points, reaching double figures for the second time this season on three of eight 3-point shooting.

Down 13 points late in the third quarter, the Sharks closed the game strong, outscoring the Seahawks 21-16 in the final quarter. LIU pulled within one possession, 56-53, when Williams hit a 3-pointer with 3:09 remaining, but ultimately the late push was not enough.

"Tonight was a tough loss, but we showed effort, team work, and did some good things!" said head coach Rene Haynes. "We moved the ball well and found each other for good shots. Tomorrow we will continue to practice with the same intensity, effort, and be ready to play at home on Saturday. We believe in each other and are staying focused on what's ahead."

The Sharks return to action on Saturday versus Fairleigh Dickinson University at the Steinberg Wellness Center. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. as LIU will celebrate Senior Day and honor its six-member senior class in the season's home finale. Television coverage will be available on NEC Front Row.
