SYRACUSE, N.Y. –
Janessa Williams led three Sharks in double figures with 16 points and eight rebounds, but the Long Island University women's basketball team fell to Le Moyne College, 83-53, on Saturday afternoon.
Sirviva Legions and
Gisela Segura followed with 10 points apiece as Legions extended her league-best streak of 17 straight games in double figures.
The Sharks trailed by 13 early in the second quarter before pulling back within one possession. Trailing 32-19, a Willams layup sparked a 12-2 run that featured six points from Legions and was capped by a jumper from
Brianna Mead, pulling LIU within three, 34-31.
After the Dolphins responded with a 9-2 spurt, the Sharks trailed 43-35 at halftime.
To start the second half, Le Moyne opened the lead and pulled away, outscoring LIU 25-8 in the third quarter.
Le Moyne's Sierra Linnin led all scorers with 25 points on seven of 13 3-point shooting. Haedyn Roberts followed with 20 points and nine rebounds.
As a team, LIU was held to 3-for-16 from 3 (18.8%), while Le Moyne shot 46.6 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from 3 (9-24), and 76.9 percent from the free throw line (20-26). The Sharks also lost the turnover battle 21-13 and the rebounding battle 38-33.
LIU returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 27, at Wagner College. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Television coverage will be available on NEC Front Row.
