WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Long Island University baseball team concluded its second doubleheader in as many days with a thrilling 11-6 win over Marist on Saturday night.
The come-from-behind victory featured late game heroics from a number of Sharks as the team mounted a successful comeback by rallying to score six runs in the seventh and eighth innings (three in the seventh and three in the eighth, respectively).
LIU started things off by pulling ahead early, securing a 5-1 lead by the fifth inning.
Ryan Rivera added to his now team-leading RBI total of six with a two-run double to break a 1-1 tie, followed by an RBI single from
Jacob Pipercic, who later came around to score as well.
Marist ended up not only tying things up, but taking a 6-5 lead by executing a comeback effort of its own by the time the seventh inning came around.
Luckily for LIU, the Sharks were able to strike with some late game magic thereafter. The team's rally began in the bottom of the seventh when a
Jarod Wade sacrifice fly scored Pipercic yet again to tie things up at six apiece.
Chandler Ketchup also took a turn throwing the hero cape on with a two-run home run in the inning, giving LIU an 8-6 lead.
The Sharks never looked back after that, but still made sure to add to their lead, nonetheless. The eighth inning featured an RBI single by
Joseph Durso, who went 3 for 5 in the game to lead the team, as well as a two-RBI double by
Max Samson, to help put the finishing touches on the 11-6 win.
LIU will return to the field Friday, Feb. 21, taking on the University of Texas at San Antonio at 7 p.m.
