HACKENSACK, N.J. – Sirviva Legions led with 18 points, but the LIU women's basketball team fell to league-leading Fairleigh Dickinson University, 75-45, on Saturday afternoon at Bogota Savings Bank Center. The Brooklyn native and Northeast Conference's fourth-leading scorer tallied double figures for the 16th consecutive game.
The Sharks fell behind early, as the Knights jumped out to a 7-0 run to start the game, capped by a three-point play by Teneisia Brown just shy of two minutes in. After trailing by as many as 13 in the first, LIU closed the opening quarter with a 3-pointer by Brianna Mead, that pulled the Sharks within 10, 19-9, in the frame's closing seconds.
LIU battled back in the second quarter, closing the deficit to four, 19-15, with 8:17 to play in the half as Legions knocked down a jumper in the paint. However, FDU closed the half on a 15-4 run to lead 34-19 at halftime and ultimately pulled away in the second half.
Janessa Williams followed Legions with eight points and nine rebounds. Mead was the team's next leading scorer with six points. Celine Mukura and Patricia Sherrill tallied four points apiece. Candela Garcia-Escribano scored three points and Dia Denes added two points.
FDU was led by Ava Renninger who scored a game-high 22 points. Brown followed with 23 points.
"The outcome wasn't what we wanted," said head coach Rene Haynes. "But we are going to stick together and have a week of working towards our next opponent. We will watch film and keep moving forward and continue believing in each other."
The Sharks return to action next Saturday afternoon at Le Moyne College. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. Television coverage will be available on NEC Front Row.
