FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Senior forward
Paige Vreeman scored two goals and freshman goaltender
Ida Huber made 35 saves in her collegiate debut as the Long Island University women's ice hockey team (5-8-1, 3-8-1 NEWHA) defeated Sacred Heart University (5-8-0, 4-7-0 NEWHA), 4-2, on Saturday afternoon, earning a split in the weekend series.
The Sharks opened the game with two early penalty kills and went on the power play at 18:37 of the first when Sacred Heart's Alyssa Antonakis was called for slashing. With less than a minute remaining in the period, Vreeman scored her first of the night, assisted by
Victoria Petruska and
Grace Babington.
In the second period, LIU stretched the lead to 2-0 on another power play goal as
Crosby Wildfong scored while Petruska and Babington each tallied their second assists of the game at the 7:01 mark.
Moments later, with 11 minutes remaining in the period and Sacred Heart on the power play, a strong poke check by Babington forced a turnover at the LIU blue line. After SHU goalie Jillian Petruno skated out of her crease and misfired on an attempted clear, Babington won the race for the loose puck and scored short-handed on a backhander from the left face-off circle, giving LIU a 3-0 edge.
Babington led LIU with three points in the game and a +2 rating. She also recorded three blocked shots.
Up 3-1 in the third period, Vreeman scored her second of the game unassisted at 16:18, tying Babington and
Drew Dyczkowski with a team best four goals this season.
The Sharks went 2-for-3 on the power play and held the Pioneers 1-for-5.
