Defensive Score Leads Sharks to Road Win Over Saint Francis

LIU claims 2nd consecutive win, 4th in last 5 games

LORETTO, Pa. – Sophomore defensive back Marshall Washington, Jr. intercepted Nick Whitfield, Jr.'s fourth quarter pass and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown to lift the visiting Long Island University football team (5-6, 3-3 NEC) past Saint Francis University (0-10, 0-6 NEC), 10-7, on Saturday afternoon at DeGol Field.

Redshirt junior quarterback Ethan Greenwood paced the LIU offense, completing 13 of 24 passes for 105 yards while gaining a game-high 79 yards on 16 attempts on the ground.

Redshirt junior running back O'Shawn Ross, Jr. followed Greenwood with 50 yards rushing on 17 attempts.

Sophomore wide receiver Cory Nichols led the LIU with a season-high five receptions for 25 yards.

After a scoreless opening quarter, LIU scored the only points of the first half on a season-long 43-yard field goal by junior kicker Will Johnson to take a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Saint Francis knotted the score at 3-3 in the third quarter on a 40-yard field goal by Mac Plummer.

Neither team was able to muster an offensive touchdown in the contest.

Defensively, senior defensive back Norman Massey led LIU with six tackles (4 solo, 2 assisted).

Graduate defensive end DQ Watkins (2 solo, 2 assisted), sophomore defensive back Jalen Bell (2 solo, 2 assisted), sophomore defensive back Kyon Conyers (2 solo, 2 assisted), redshirt freshman defensive back Braylon Vincent (3 solo, 1 assisted), sophomore defensive tackle Scoop Gardner, Jr. (3 solo, 1 assisted), and Washington, Jr. (1 solo, 3 assisted), all followed Massey with four tackles each.

Gardner Jr and sophomore defensive end Martavius Durden, Jr. both recorded sacks for the Sharks to round out a strong effort by the LIU stop unit.

Up next, LIU will close out the 2025 season next Saturday with an NEC matchup versus rival Wagner College. Kickoff for Senior Day at Shark Stadium is slated for 12 p.m. The game can be seen digitally on NEC Front Row.
