Sharks Overcome Early Deficit, Defeat New Haven

Sara van Gisteren, Mia Rojas-Avila finish with double-digit kills

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Long Island University women's volleyball team (8-7, 5-0 NEC) improved its record to above .500 with Wednesday's 3-1 road win over the University of New Haven, defeating the Chargers 3-1 after falling in the first set.

New Haven took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-23 win in the opening set, though the momentum was short-lived; the Sharks scored on 14-straight rallies to take a 20-9 lead in the second frame before winning the set 25-13, tying the match at one.

The Sharks and Chargers continued to battle in the third and fourth sets, but the Sharks would come out on top of two closely contested sets by scores of 25-22 and 27-25, giving LIU its first road win in conference play.

Junior Sara van Gisteren led LIU with 22 kills with a hitting percentage of .395, while sophomore Mia Rojas-Avila also finished with double-digit kills (12). Senior Karly Klaer racked up 41 assists in the win, while freshman Brooke Boyles led LIU with 11 digs. Junior Yasmeen Muhammad recorded a team-high two total blocks.

LIU returns to the Steinberg Wellness Center for back-to-back home matches against Mercyhurst University on Friday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
