EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - The Long Island University men's ice hockey team (2-5-0) defeated Simon Fraser University (0-1), 3-2, in an exhibition game in its home opener on Monday afternoon at the Northwell Health Ice Center.
Brennan Nelson scored the game-winner for the Sharks with just over five minutes to play in the third period.
After a scoreless first period, the two sides combined to score four goals in less than a five-minute span in the second. At 14:36 of the frame,
Nick Bernardo scored on the power play, assisted by
Dylan Kinch and
Trent Powell, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead.
Moments later, Simon Fraser's Walker Erickson scored an even strength goal, tying the game at 17:01. Nearly 90 seconds later, Tyler Chan tipped in a left-point shot from Dylan Brooks and the Red Leafs took a 2-1 lead.
However, LIU tied the game again 13 seconds after when
Noah Serdachny punched home a feed from
Anthony Lucarelli, tying the game 2-2.
Powell fed Brennan charging to the net to score the game winner at 14:53 of the third period.
In total, LIU outshot Simon Fraser 32-17, and went 1-for-6 on the power play while holding the Red Leafs 0-for-2 on the man advantage.

The Sharks return to action on Thursday night, Oct. 30, versus Maryville University in an exhibition game. Puck drop at Northwell Health Ice Center is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Television coverage is available digitally on FloHockey.
