NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Freshman forward
Dylan Kinch and senior forward
Brett Rylance each scored twice, and the Long Island University men's ice hockey team (2-5-0) tallied three third period goals to down Merrimack College (3-2-0), 5-2, on Saturday night at Lawler Arena.
In total this weekend, Kinch scored the first four goals of his collegiate career, after scoring twice in Friday night's game at the University of New Hampshire. Rylance posted a three-point weekend, including an assist of Kinch's second goal on Friday night.
LIU held a 1-0 lead after the first period due to Kinch's goal at the 11:40 mark, assisted by Sixten Jennersjö.
At 6:40 of the second period, LIU stretched its lead to 2-0 on a power play goal by
Anthony Lucarelli, assisted by
Nick Bernardo and
Trent Powell. But minutes later, Merrimack answered with two scores and the game was tied through 40 minutes.
Brett Rylance broke the tie at 11:44 of the third period with a power play goal, assisted by
J.R Perdion and
Trevor Griebel.
Kinch and Rylance each added empty netters in the game's final minutes to seal the victory.
The Warriors outshot the Sharks, 48-37, but sophomore goaltender
Daniel Duris made a career-high 46 saves to bolster LIU. The Sharks went two of six on power-play chances and held Merrimack 0-for-4 on the man advantage.
The Sharks return to action on Monday afternoon in their home opener, an exhibition game versus Simon Fraser University. Puck drop at Northwell Health Ice Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. Television coverage will be available on FloHockey.
